To emphasise the features of Qasbaum 01, a simulation places it in a working-class area situated in the historical centre in a Southern Italy city. Qasbaum 01 fills up an empty space, probably inherited by the Second World War bombings, now occupied by neglected warehouses. This location, potentially prestigious because it’s 300 meters from the sea, is perfect to underline Qasbaum’s features like comfort, security and the privacy feeling and its potential for regeneration projects.
The building consists in seven modules measuring 12,5 in length and 2,45 in width. The elevation is variable to allow to join the modules. Seen in plan, Qasbaumis a perfect square measuring 12,50 x 12,50 with an inner space of 7,50 on the edge. The modules’ overlapping areas host the stairs or the facilities.
All XLAM components are designed to be transported by container and two containers are needed to stock the 108 cubic meters of the required wood panels.
Qasbaum 01 is designed for a dry-hot climate. A minimum insulation is realised using panels of Arundo donax, common cane widely planted and spread in the mild temperate, subtropical and tropical regions of both hemispheres. Common cane is a perfect insulation system and, moreover, is one of the best support for plaster. Because of its spread, the amount of cane panels required (76 cubic meters including the supporting frame, that can be stored in a single container), can be found locally, almost every where in the world.
An external frame supports moving tents and climbing plants to avoid the solar irradiation and it also realizes a green double-skin façade, characterizing the whole outside look.
Traditional blue shutters, in the inner court side, complete the sun light regulation system.
