The modules’ size matches those of standard containers to optimise the transport causes. In Qasbaum each module is equivalent to a living space (a bedroom, a kitchen, a living room, a study, etc). Therefore, each living space is not wider than 2,50 meters and not longer than 12.5 meters bringing the internal spaces to a minimum. The Existenzminimum is back again. Without pursuing the Functionalism’s dream (or nightmare) about the minimum dwelling, a rationale use of the space is required to face such small dimensions.
One hundred years ago, the New Objectivity movement designed houses considering the minimum space required to accomplish all “living” actions (eating, cooking, sleeping, cleaning, etc) but not ever including the “existential” space. We can stay in a very small inner space, like a train coach, but if we can extend our gaze outside, we feel good.
The care of sights and perspectives is a key feature in Qasbaum project. Without this premise, Qasbaum could not have been conceived. All Qasbaum modules have a large window facing the inner square court, a private three dimensional space that amplifies the inner space, preserving privacy, and allowing air circulations, natural light diffusion, avoiding direct solar radiation. On the top of these, the court improves the sight, using trees, plants, colours, water. We can say that modules provide the functional space, and the free volume between modules provides the perceived space.
