Education and first steps (2001 – 2008)

I hold an MSc in Architecture from the University of Firenze (2001) and I’ve started my professional activity as Architect in Bologna (Italy). I have been registered at Ordine degli Architetti since May 2002 to 2014, when moving to UK, I switched to ARB.

My professional experience has begun collaboarting with Claudio Trombetti, who introduce me to the importance of staying on site to experience constructions methods and difficulties, working on projects for hospitality, banks, offices, retails and flats refurbishment.

In 2004 I cofounded with Arch. Tugnoli and Ing. Spalletti T+2 Studio, working on 20+ realised projects in 4 years and 10+ competitions. Projects include landscape, schools, pools, detached houses, refurbishments, conversions, multi-storey buildings, workplaces, urban design, interior design, green design, and research project such as “Wel_hops – Welfare housing policies for senior citizens”, a UE project involving a multidisciplinary and international team that defined best practices for elderly people home design.
In 2008 I’ve decided to focus on the challenges I had at the University of Ferrara and to go on as a freelance practitioner, and left the T+2 Studio.

Projects (2008 – 2013)

Since 2008 I’ve collaborated with several professionals and/or companies. With Costruire Srl, a general contractor company specialized in housing. Working with Architect Giuseppe Satta, projects include 10 flats building in Vergato (2007-2009),  16 private housing estate in Faenza (2008-2009), masterplan for a co-housing project in Bologna (2009), and a participatory design experience with 13 families.

In 2011 the project I designed with Grassi & Crespi s.r.l. and Ebner Associates Italia s.r.l., was selected and included in the Directory for High Performance, low cost residential building in Milan.
Near to Milan (in Noviglio), I’ve designed a masterplan for 70 private housing with Ing. Gianni Sofri and Coop Habitat. I’ve worked on the design for private homes refurbishments (2 flats in Bologna in 2008, and a villa in Formentera, in 2013), and conversions (2010).

I’ve designed with Giuseppe Satta a multifuncional bulding (commercial, Labs, showroom) in Sevilla, Spain (2000 square meters, estimated cost 2,5 M GBP, 2008) and a Showroom and creative Lab at Odzak, Bosnia in 2009. I’ve also edited the Guidelines for the Historical Lapidary Museum in Todi, Umbria, in 2008, a preparatory study for the following public tender call.

I have been collaborating with scenographer Mauro Tinti, and have designed the set for Biografilm Festival (Bologna, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012). Since 2011 to 2013 I’ve also realised 6 stands or installations for commercial or cultural events (Stora Enso’s stand at MADE Expo, 2011, MAK Holz’ stand at “Progetto Fuoco”, Verona, 2012, DIAPReM’s stand at Restauro 2011, 2012, 2013, Wood Wide Wall at Department of Architecture, Ferrara, 2012.

I’ve designed a new office building for Cebora Spa (Bologna, 2013, estimated cost 0,5 GBP).
Occasionally, I’ve also worked as Graphic designer for publishing projects, have completed surveys in historical contexts, and work as colour consultant.

My latest professional experience in Italy was with Vitre Studio, a Engineering Company in Rovereto, Italy, as BIM coordinator and colour consultant. The Vitre Studio focuses mostly on tenders for public sector, including design and construction for theatres, schools and public building.
With Vitre Studio, between september and november 2013, we’ve participated to 5 national and international competitions or tenders, and won a project for high School Labs in Mirandola.

Here I have been given the opportunity to merge and exploit all my experiences and contribute to significant projects, including the on-going tender for the Manifattura Tabacchi in Rovereto, an original project by Kengo Kuma, estimated cost 40 million GBP, where as BIM coordinator I have taken care of all design and estimate aspects.

London, 2014-2021

I moved to London in 2014 and I spent the following three years at Hampson and Williams Architects (HWA), Award-winning practice (RIBA Awards 2003, RICS Award, Sunday Times British Home Award, Evening Standard Best New Home Award, Daily Telegraph Homes Award), getting an in-depth knowledge of UK regulations and standards and working on a variety of exciting schemes (High-end residential, Hospitality, Mixed-used developments, Commercial and Retail, Master plan, etc).

Since I believe that the act of designing and the process of building should be linked together, in 2018 I joined  Avalon Construction & Design, Award-winning Main Contractor, where I have created the Design and Design and Build services, and I have developed tools and methods for fully implementing BIM Level 2 practices in the company processes.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Building Information Modeling (2001 – today)

I started using BIM at the very beginning of my career in 2001. I started a collaboration with Nemetschek Italia (2003) to support and to train professionals in Allplan and Cinema 4D, becoming Nemetschek Competence Center in 2004 until 2014.

I’ve been speaker in public events in Italy and UK, the most recent being “Changing the shape of Development and Construction: Maximising Profit and Minimising waste” (29th of January 2020, Gallagher Insurance and Risk Management, The Walbrook Building, 25 Walbrook, London).

I have been author of articles on BIM on published books and magazines.

Lecturing and research (2007 – 2014)

In 2007, I have been invited to join the University of Ferrara as lecturer at the Department of Architecture: until 2014, I have been in charge of the course of Representation Techniques where I trained students (+130 each year) in BIM and Graphic design, print and colour management.

Since I’ve joined the University, I worked as researcher focusing on technology transfer between University/Professionals/Industry. These experiences included a variety of public events and dissemination activities, where I have been involved also as Creative and Art director.

During this years at the University, I managed and coordinated several teams (a range between 5-25 people), motivated people, mentored junior collaborators and developed organisational and time management skills.

Colour & Architecture (2011-2012)

I had the opportunity to engage with leading colour’s experts so moving my interests also in the field of colour, which characterises my professional profile today. As result, I have been trainer in colour management and colour design for professional organisations, and occasionally I worked as colour consultant.

In 2011, I have worked on the book “Il progetto del Colore. Vademecum operativo per la gestione cromatica delle superfici architettoniche” (Colour design. Operational Vademecum for architectural surfaces’ colour management), edited by Marcello Balzani, as author of 4 chapters and edited all the contents (graphic design of printed book, digital section, video).

Timber construction (2011-2012)

In 2010 I’ve coordinated a research focused on timber technology in building’s construction (partners: Department of Architecture – University of Ferrara, Consorzio Ferrara Ricerche, STILE 21 consortium) and I worked with the Austrian MAK Holz and the Finnish Stora Enso Timber, world leading companies in the wooden construction market. This activity included publications, digital contents, video, documentaries, interviews, etc.

I was called to design StoraEnso’s stand at MADE Expo 2011 in Milan, and a stand for MakHoltz, then I joined the company and worked for 12 months on several internal projects, learning their production’s processes and the XLAM building methods. Qasbaum project is a direct consequence of this experience.

For MAK Holtz I redesigned their communication strategy and their logo.

My  activity with Stora Enso culminated with a special publication for Paesaggio Urbano | Urban Design, an international journal on Architecture that I contribute to as BIM and Representation techniques chief editor.
