Approaching BIM

Research abstract about connections between BIM methodology and Timber construction

Green BIM Wood |New processes meet new technologies to build innovative architecture

1 [re] design processes
Innovation in Technology is not enough. Innovation in process is a real need, is not a choice. We live in a critical phase regarding economic rules, environmental respect, energy saving. More of 30 per cent of delays and mistakes in sites come from delay and mistake in design processes. It’s time to renew these processes.
2 Learning BIM
2.1 A didactic experience
The Department of Architecture in the Ferrara University began to teach BIM a dozen of years ago. A staff of teachers proposed 7 years ago the first serie of videotutorial about BIM. Four years ago the project called “faftram” starts. Today, this blended learning project is going on.
2.2 Toward ECDL for BIM
Talking about BIM we intend to propose a method. The gained experience allow us to propose a methodological approach on the BIM topics. To verify the method’s correctness, we propose an approach based on ECDL system (syllabus, exercise, test) tested in a Universitary context.
2.3 E-learn BIM
A blended learning approach seems the best way to learn BIM Method. Video tutorial are not enough: they need a web context because students need of a didactic path. Topics like communication, graphic interfaces, content accessibility, comes in play.
3 Comparing paths
3.1 Comparing Processes
To verify a method applicability, the best way is comparing. We propose ten re-designed projects. The subject is housing. Each project is remodelled using two BIM software. Starting by the same building, we obtain similar results. BIM method is the same, software BIM are different. We compare the operative process.
3.2 Comparing Projects
How BIM method, helping a technological transformation, could change the project. We propose the critic comparison between the original project and the remodelled version.

3.3 Overview
An overview of the current debate about BIM. Survey on publications, magazines, scientific papers, researches.
3.4 Think BIM, Do it Green!
From “Green BIM” (E. KRYGIEL, B. NIES, 2008) to “Green BIM Wood”. How BIM helps green design, how Wooden building needs BIM.
3.5 Think Wood, Do it Good!
Design process in wooden building. Integrated process between production, building companies, designers. How to manage a complex process (from concept to realisation)
3.6 Waiting for Interoperability
Is Software interoperability a chimera? Overview of researches on this topic. The main aim: interoperability between teams (not between software)
3.7 Processes: industrial production and design
Enlarge our view: understanding industrial process to set design process. Time saving, cost saving. Lowering grey energy in design process.
3.8 Cross Laminated Timber / Cross Layered Competences
CLT tecnology’s secret is in mutual collaborative work between components. BIM’s secret is in mutual collaborative work between competences. How Cross laminated timber technology could meet BIM method.
